Division Facts

Division Facts correspond to multiplication facts. Some examples are 15 ÷ 3, 6 ÷ 1, and 0 ÷ 9. The corresponding facts would be 3 x 5 = 15, 6 x 1 = 6, and 0 x 9 = 0.
Reminder 1: 42÷ 6 = 7; in this case, 42 is the dividend, 6 is the divisor and 7 is the quotient.
Reminder 2: Any number divided by 1 is the same number. 6 ÷ 1 = 6
Reminder 3: Any number divided by itself will always have a quotient of 1. 6 ÷ 6 = 1
Reminder 4: Property of Zero- Zero divided by any other number will always have a quotient of zero. 0 ÷ 9 = 0
Reminder 5: You cannot divide any number (not even zero) by zero. This is because there is not number that when multiplied by zero will gave any other number. Zero cannot be divided by zero because there is no single quotient.
8 ÷ 0 is undefined.

To solve division facts if you happen to forget a quotient, remember the multiplication fact for those numbers and you should have no trouble.
Try it like this for the problem12 ÷ 4;
Think, 4 x [ ] = 12
What times 4 is 12?
4 x 3 = 12,
So, 12 ÷ 4 = 3

Practice these problems using this method:
Practice 1:
24 ÷ 3
3 x [ ] = 24
3 x (8) = 24
24 ÷ 3 = (8)
Practice 2:
36 ÷ 4
4 x [ ] = (36)
(4) x (9) = 36
36 ÷ (4) = (9)

Solve Mentally:
1. 12 ÷ 3
2. 72 ÷ 8
3. 81 ÷ 9
4. 63 ÷ 7
5. 54 ÷ 9
6. 56 ÷ 8

*0 and 1 are not included because any number times 0 is 0 and any number times 1 is itself.
This table will help you find and memorize quotients for division facts. To use this table find the dividend in the table under the column of the divisor, which is on the top line. Find the quotient by checking which row your dividend is in. The last box on the left of the dividend’s row is the quotient.
For example, for 56 ÷ 7 find 56 under the 7 column. That 56 is in row 8, so 8 is the quotient. 56 ÷ 7 = 8
